Chapter Eighteen

Hoods in the Sand

Diana walked along Ventura Boulevard, keeping her eyes open for a shiny-new bright-red GMC Yukon. She figured it had to be here someplace, at least according to the reports she’d been getting.

She spotted it and spied the Luke Skywalker bobblehead on the dash. It looked like the Hoods had taken Lacey’s gift seriously. It was silly, but somehow it pleased her.

She started looking along the beach and was a little taken aback when she caught sight of them. They were all dressed to swim and were on body-boards heading out into the ocean. She found a bench near the sand and sat to watch.

They made a good team, each of them seemed to be both watching their surroundings, but also watching each other’s backs. They had to have trained together for a long time to make that all look as seamless as it was.

Stephanita was in the lead, and she headed further out. The others threaded behind her until they were far enough out to satisfy them. Then they basically sat waiting. Diana wasn’t sure this was the sport for her, as she didn’t think she had the patience to simply wait.

After at least ten minutes of waiting, they finally seemed to come to an accord about the incoming wave and hopped up on it, so to speak. It turned out to be a pretty good one, and they all four rode it in as far as they could, winding up gracefully sliding in on the water and making it look easy for them to simply step off the board into the sand.

It was interesting, since that was not at all how Lacey and company had described them. In fact, the description that Lacey used had made the group sound downright incompetent. She wondered about this, but had no real explanation beyond that possibly they hadn’t trained, or had anyone to organize their assault in Chicago.

Diana sat and watched them for a couple hours and thought they were incredible as a team. She could send her people to them for training, let alone need to train the Hoods for action.

In the end, the only thing she couldn’t figure out was why they hadn’t seen her watching them. Until they came in after a long wave ride and all sat down around her and smiled.

And Stephanita said in slightly accented English, “Greetings, Lady Diana. Have you learned very much about surfing this afternoon?”

She laughed and put a hand out to Nita. “I guess that means you knew I was here?”

Nita nodded and shook Diana’s hand. The rest of the Hoods laughed. “We saw you arrive, wandering along the street, looking at our beautiful truck, gazing at the Skywalker, and then come watch us. We did not want to interrupt your day at the beach. I doubt you get many.”

Diana said, “No, I don’t. And being from Chicago, we don’t get much beach time there. I have to admit, I was enjoying watching you all play in the waves.
